Abstract

In recent years, smart textiles have gained interest as technical textiles for the fibre product and automotive industry due to their advantageous functions such as lighting, heating, and sensing. However, most products are manufactured from nonrenewable textiles. The integration of biobased materials with smart textiles is, therefore, necessary to overcome the waste problem. Nowadays, new-generation vehicles not only need to meet the main function of driving but must also guarantee the comfort of driving as well as decorative functions, sound quality, and lighting. In this regard, smart biotextiles usually focus on segments of automotive interior designers. This chapter gives an overview of using smart biotextiles for automotive applications. A discussion of critical issues in automotive applications is highlighted. Moreover, textile material requirements and available smart biotextiles for the automotive sector are critically reviewed herein. Furthermore, the challenges, opportunities, and future research are also discussed in this chapter.
