Abstract
Integration of nanomaterials on textile substrates and nanotechnology based processes has a great potential in creation of functional, smart and intelligent textiles. This chapter reviews the recent advances in use of nanotechnology for preparation of functional and smart textiles in diverse areas of applications and has been sub-divided into five main sections. The first section discusses potential of nanomaterials, nanofibers, nanocomposites and nanotechnology based processes (nanocoating and nanofinishing) for preparation of multi-functional and smart textiles. The second section deals with textile with different functionality such as superhydrophobic, antimicrobial, UV resistance, flame retardant, antistatic etc. and different nanotechnology based approaches for their preparation without compromising the comfort and flexibility. Third section highlights different smart and intelligent textiles (e.g., stimuli-responsive, electro-conductive, power generative, photonic etc.) and their applications. Fourth section discusses different technical textiles enhanced by nanotechnology, such as medical textiles, automotive textiles, protective textiles and the textiles for filtration applications. In the fifth and last section of this chapter market potential of nanotechnology based textiles, commercial products, present challenges and future scope in the area have been highlighted.
