Abstract

Natural plant products have been used throughout human history for various purposes. At present, herbal products are being used to treat several health issues and conditions, as well as allergies, arthritis, migraine, fatigue, wounds, burns, gastrointestinal issues, skin infections, genetic disorders, and even cancer. Once a patient is stricken by a chronic disease, classically trained physicians cannot ignore herbal medicines any longer, must have adequate information about their properties, and hence will be more receptive and prescribe their patients herbal medicines. By taking an entire drug and supplement history, a dialog can be initiated to rationally compare the appropriateness of herbal remedies and regulated pharmaceuticals with reference to the severity of the condition. For herb-using patients who view conventional medicine with ambivalence, the physician can foster a more open and communicative relationship by demonstrating an objective understanding of both alternative and conventional approaches. The public should thus have adequate knowledge of herbal medicine, and doctors should take an active part in this process.
