Abstract

Feeding an increasing world population has become one of the most important challenges of our time. With almost 7.8 billion people in a complicated landscape of climate change, an increased competition for natural resources, and economic and financial uncertainty, it is necessary to establish goals for the contribution and conduct of fisheries, aquaculture, and the whole bio-marine sector toward food safety and nutrition in order to ensure sustainable economic, social, and environmental development. To do so, it is also important to create a legislative framework in order to control and supervise all new advances in the sector ensuring the consumer’s protection in each step of the food chain. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to give a general overview of the current regulation on the use of novel bio-marine resources and new processing technologies from an international perspective, focusing on the framework of the European Union (EU).
