Abstract
As a first approach to transportation system’s lifecycle, this chapter identifies the main environmental impacts originated in the phases of planning, design, construction, and demobilization of infrastructure for transportation modes (road, railway, pipeline, water, and air). It will be possible to observe that there are specific actions that are common to the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure of all transportation modes; and, it is possible to identify the reflexes of these actions in the physical, biotic, and anthropic environments. In the end, this chapter lists a selected set of possible measures to mitigate the effects of these reflexes and presents examples that consider the most commonly used process in transportation systems planning and the potential social and environmental impacts resulting from the planning, design, construction, and demobilization phases.
