Abstract
This chapter introduces the main concepts related to the transportation activity considering its different transportation modes (road, railway, water, pipeline, and air transportation), the structure of each system with its subsystems (way, vehicle, terminal, and control), the steps needed for their implementation and management (planning, design, construction, operation, and demobilization), and a current overview of the transportation sector around the world. These preliminary descriptions will allow the reader to understand how transportation is carried out and to achieve the main goal of this book, which is to associate transportation to energy use and to the impacts on the physical, biotic, and anthropic environments.
