Abstract

This chapter identifies key scientific issues associated with friction stir welding of dissimilar alloys and materials. Heat generation, temperature distribution, and material flow have been discussed in the dissimilar friction stir welding. A sound understanding of temperature distribution and material flow is key for obtaining defect-free and high-integrity joints. Formation of intermetallic compounds during dissimilar welding is an important issue. Factors influencing formation of intermetallic compounds have been discussed, and a strategy to mitigate or eliminate formation of intermetallic compounds has been discussed.
