Abstract

Ignored. Overlooked. Dismissed. This is the fate of many research scientists who attempt to communicate with impact using digital and social media channels and platforms, including researchers who work in the field of sensory science. This is not because they do not have interesting stories to tell – far from it. Rather, it is because they fail to observe – and frequently violate – the fundamental principles of effective data storytelling. These narrative techniques are not unique to the always-on, digital-first media ecosystem, but its instant gratification culture of TLDR – Too Long, Did not Read – makes them doubly relevant.
