Abstract
In this chapter, a high-level description of the JPEG2000 algorithm is provided. JPEG2000 is the latest international standard for providing state-of-the-art compression performance and it offers a number of functionalities that address the requirements of emerging imaging applications. With JPEG baseline, an image is compressed using a particular quantization table, which determines the quality that will be achieved at decompression time. When JPEG lossless or JPEG-LS is used for compression, only lossless decompression is available. JPEG has four “modes” of operation and they rely on distinctly different technologies. JPEG2000 brings a new paradigm to the standards of image compression and creates a framework where the image compression system is more akin to an image processing system. The benefits of the four codes are integrated into JPEG2000. Key compression parameters such as resolution and quality can be delayed until the creation of the codestream and several image products can be extracted from a single codestream. The compressor decides the maximum image quality, resolution, and size. Progression of four dimensions such as quality, resolution, spatial location, and component are supported by JPEG2000. In JPEG2000, the image is defined as a two dimensional rectangular arrays of samples. JPEG2000 requires more memory than the sequential JPEG and JPEG2000 is close to JPEG-LS.
