Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of rats, while also concentrating on pertinent rat surgical models. It discusses the care of common fragile models that require attention due to surgical procedures, experimental manipulation, or genetic modification. Before developing a surgical model for a given study, it is important for the surgeon to have a thorough knowledge of rat anatomy and the organ(s) of interest. The surgeon must have appropriate training to ensure good aseptic technique, gentle handling, and minimal dissection of the tissue, as well as appropriate use of surgical instruments and suture material. Care of both surgical and fragile models includes interventions such as modified husbandry, diet, administration of electrolytes and analgesics, heat support, urinary bladder management, and enhanced monitoring at time points relevant to the specific model.
