Abstract

The chapter describes properties, genome, antigenic characteristics, toxins and virulence factors, transmission routes and updated diagnostic techniques of Streptococcus. The chapter elaborates mechanism of resistance used by Streptococcus strains against penicillin and β-lactams, macrolides, quinolones, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, glycopeptides, spectinomycin and cationic antimicrobial peptides.
