Abstract

This chapter describes properties, genome, antigenic characteristics, toxins and virulence factors, transmission routes and updated diagnostic techniques of Salmonella. The chapter elaborates mechanism of resistance used by Salmonella strains against cephalosporin, quinolone, aminoglycoside, sulfonamide, chloramphenicol, tetracycline and colistin. Characteristics of antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella isolates observed in different animals such as cattle, pigs, horses, poultry, wildlife, aquaculture and in human are discussed in details.
