Abstract

Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh) is an important grain legume cultivated mainly, in the Indian subcontinent, parts of Africa, and Central America. The crop is susceptible to about 15 viruses and 4 virus-like diseases. However, sterility mosaic disease caused by pigeon pea sterility mosaic virus and yellow mosaic disease induced by mungbean yellow mosaic virus and other legume-infecting begomoviruses are the most widespread and economically important. Pigeon pea sterility mosaic virus and mungbean yellow mosaic virus are transmitted by mite Aceria cajani and whitefly Bemisia tabaci, respectively. The thrust of this chapter is to present an overview of virus diseases of pigeon pea with emphasis on sterility mosaic and yellow mosaic diseases.
