Abstract

This chapter concerns applications in the hard coatings field. First, the new requirements of high-end processing industry to the coated tools were introduced. According to the coating hardness, hard coatings can be divided into three types: ordinary hard coating, superhard nanocoating, and intrinsic superhard/ultrahard coating. In this chapter the special characteristics of different coatings are summarized. Conventional technology for deposition of hard coatings includes thermal chemical vapor deposition, hollow cathode ion plating, hot-wire arc ion plating, and cathodic arc ion plating. Some new developments, including hot-wire-enhanced magnetron sputtering, high power pulsed magnetron sputtering and arc-enhanced glow discharge techniques, are introduced. Finally, the change of hard coating to wear parts development is pointed out.
