Abstract

Three goals justified this book: to provide information about cancer in a form suitable for interested laypersons, to address the concerns of the residents of Los Angeles County about local risk, and to use the abundant information to advance our understanding of cancer causation. Research into the causes of human cancer is a complicated business that ultimately requires the kind of analytic studies of carcinogens and gene variants described in Chapter 5, How a Cancer Can Be Caused by a Carcinogenic Toxin?. To be successful, studies must be capable of ruling out bias, confounding, and chance as alternative explanations for apparent links.
