Abstract

Crude oil is noted for powering human civilizations since the industrial revolutions in the 1700s. It has provided the much-needed finances for the infrastructural developments across nations and has contributed to corruption and civil strifes in many parts of the world, including Nigeria. As a result of negligence on the environmental impacts of oil extraction in the Niger Delta, several environmental and socio-economic problems have emerged. This chapter presents an understanding of the core issues relating to the eco-economics of exploration in Nigeria, and this includes a conceptual understanding of the ecological economics of oil production, eco-sustainability in crude oil exploration, and oil exploration and ecological destruction, as well as promoting eco-economics/eco-sustainability in crude oil exploration.
