Abstract

The impacts of crude oil activities in Southern Nigeria pose serious concerns because these activities endanger the sustainability, development, and productivity of fishes and its ecosystem. With the numerous economic advantages of oil exploration and production in Nigeria, failure to manage the environment has brought regrettable results in some major sectors of the economy, including fisheries. The blessings of oil exploration in Nigeria have, undoubtedly, generated a downturn in her national life. She has moved from a multi-commodity economy to mono-commodity, loss of employment, deprivation of basic amenities, and build-up of unscrupulous activities, among others. The effects of oil exploration on fisheries are daunting, and it is imperative to review, create, and strictly adhere to sustainable policies by all stakeholders to pilot Nigeria to a better and greater economy.
