Abstract

Forensic victimology is not limited only to use in criminal investigations and the resulting criminal trials. It also serves an important role in civil litigation. When someone is harmed because of a crime or an act of negligence, the state may be able to pursue criminal charges against those responsible. Or there may be no criminal charges involved. In either case, a victim does not automatically receive restitution from their offender. In order to be made whole, they will likely need to take civil action.
