Abstract

This chapter sets up the context for the implementation of the collection services supply chain. The implementation requires close partnership among library functions which are responsible for collection services, between libraries and their vendors, as well as between libraries and their users. The chapter recommends that libraries integrate their vendors' knowledge creation processes, their own collection processes, as well as their users' scholarship and research processes into an extended chain, where all three entities can share overlapping expertise, as well as each entity can contribute unique expertise across the entire chain, where applicable. The goal of the chapter is to set the stage for later part of the book on the topic of supply chain innovation and integration, which heavily depend on internal and external partnerships.
