Abstract

Liuweidihuang Wan (LW) for invigorating ShenYinXu (SYX) Syndrome, has being widely used in health maintenance. In this study, the underlying mechanisms of LW were assessed by comparing the metabolic urinary profiles of pre- and postdose LW of healthy persons. The urine samples of healthy persons of pre- and postdosed LW by UPLC/ESI-QTOF-MS were analyzed in positive and negative ionization modes. The total ion chromatograms were readily distinguishable using a multivariate statistical analysis method. The metabolomics approach enables us to visualize significant alterations in metabolite expression patterns as a result of postdosed LW administration induced metabolic variations when compared to that of predosed LW. The major metabolic pathways including the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, gut microbiota, and sialic acid biosynthesis were identified to be involved with metabolic regulation and the improvement of LW – this elucidated the mechanisms of intervention actions and the healthy effects of LW.
