Abstract

In this chapter extended applications of metals biotechnology are illustrated with respect to reductive bioleaching, bioprocessing for extraction of rare earth elements, bioleaching of industrial and electronic wastes, and biohydrometallurgy of polymetallic ores and ocean nodules. The use of heterotrophic microorganisms in bioprocessing of minerals is also outlined.
