Abstract

The skin is the body's primary defense against injury and infection, it is also important for vitamin production and thermoregulation. The skin is made up of the epidermis (outer layer), dermis (central layer) and the subcutis. Skin barrier function is provided by numerous skin elements: the stratum corneum, immunological barrier, chemical barrier, tight junctions and the microbiome. The skin constitutes a formidable barrier against the ingress of chemicals including drugs. The first part of this chapter focuses on the structure and function of the skin while the second portion examines the use of solid microneedles for enhanced transdermal drug delivery.
