Abstract
2-Oxoaldehydes and 2-oxoacids show divergent chemical behavior and the study of both is becoming a growing area in synthetic organic chemistry because their broad spectrum of reactions and applications exist on different grounds. Therefore, this chapter highlights the basic nature, stability, and physical properties of these molecules, including their synthesis mainly through oxidation reactions. These molecules are also useful in the synthesis of different heterocycles and bear applications in medicine and biology in which pyruvic acid and sialic acid are key substrates in various metabolic pathways.
