Abstract
In this chapter, an introduction is given to the background knowledge needed to understand the fundamental progress in fields related to metal-organic frameworks. It has three main parts: (1) an introduction to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) covering synthesis of metal-containing nodes or coordination bonds and linker design for MOFs, the postsynthetic modification (PSM) of MOFs, MOF hybrids or composites, and the potential applications of MOFs; (2) rare earth metal-organic frameworks (REMOFs); and (3) rare earth functionalized metal-organic framework hybrid materials (REFMOFHMs). The latter two parts introduce a major topic of this book, i.e., rare earth metal-organic framework hybrid materials (REMOFHMs).
