Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the various topics and concepts surrounding computer networks and networking. It discusses some of the key issues related to networking with a formal definition of computer networks, along with a description of the various terms related to this definition. It also introduces basic networking vocabulary as well as several key networking concepts and focuses on some important concepts such as issues related to computer networking, network protocols, network media, and interoperability. These terms are further expanded and additional terms are defined as new concepts are introduced in the remaining chapters of the book.
