Abstract

This book begins with a short history of the microphone, which outlines the early years, from Bell's patent of 1876 to Blake's transmitter of 1888; the rise of broadcasting (1907 to 1920s); the rise of mass communications (1920s to 1940s); the great condenser breakthrough of the electret in the early sixties; studio microphone technology (1940 and 50s); and current and future developments in digital microphones.
