Abstract

This article comments on the European dimension in vocational education through the application of the Centres of Vocational Excellence Initiative. Conceptual and strategic orientations for skills development as part of VET policies are described. Key European documents that set priorities for preparing a quality workforce through a focus on skills are identified. Particular attention is given to the Centres of Vocational Excellence as an opportunity to create local skills ecosystems for innovation and social inclusion. Conclusions are reached towards a strategic vision for the acquisition of vocational and key competences through the provision of high quality vocational education and training.
