Abstract

Born to Run is a catchy rock album title but a feeble answer to the burning question “Why did you run for office?” The skills needed to run and those required to serve are not innate, conferred by socioeconomic status, or inherited from officeholder relatives. There is no singular path to elected office and no singular answer to the question “Why did you run?” Such a life-changing decision is often accompanied by a fascinating backstory. This month’s Under the Dome describes what can go into the contemplation, preparation, and implementation of the decision of a nurse practitioner (NP) to run for office.
