Abstract

The effect of postgraduate fellowship on new nurse practitioners (NPs) in specialized areas skills and competence to offset physician shortages was evaluated. Literature sourced from Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and PubMed was reviewed to determine the impact of postgraduate fellowship on new graduate’s productivity, retention, and confidence. Specialized NPs had increased confidence and employment retention after the fellowship. Further studies need to address NP fellow’s productivity, confidence, and skills compared with untrained NPs. The absence of fellowship standardization, small cohorts, and various research methods were limitations. Further research into fellowships is needed because they increase NP skills and retention.
