Abstract
Viral upper respiratory infections (URIs) are frequently treated with antibiotic prescriptions in an outpatient urgent care setting. Misuse, overprescription, and inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions are large contributors to antibiotic resistance, which is associated with economic ramifications, decreased trust in medicine, and further infections. The purpose of this project was to promote antibiotic stewardship in managing viral URIs through the implementation of a URI protocol in an urgent care setting. The overall aims of this project were to improve patient health literacy in understanding viral URIs and change the current prescribing practices at the urgent care clinic. The results in this project showed statistically significant (P = 0.001896) improvement in health literacy of patients after patient-focused viral URI education.
