Abstract
Man with the Killer Smile: The Life and Crimes of a Serial Mass Murderer, delves into the life of one of Texas’ lesser-known serial murderers, George Jefferson Hassell. The book opens with a prologue providing a very brief summary of the night George Hassell brutally murdered his wife and eight stepchildren in Farwell, Texas in 1926. Dubbed the “Texas Bluebeard” by the newspapers for killing two of his three wives, Hassell went on to notoriously murder not only two of his wives, but also 11 of his stepchildren. Roth carefully points out within the first page of his book, that much of what is known about Hassell’s history and crimes comes from his own account. Hassell’s stories often changed, and timelines were never consistent, leaving the truth to still be determined. Roth cautions readers to remain skeptical of the information provided, as so little could be found and verified regarding George Hassell and his life. It becomes apparent throughout the book, just how well Hassell fits the stereotype of a serial killer.
