Abstract

GeF 4 has been prepared by heating BaGeF 6 at 600 °C under a pressure of 10 −3 Torr and has been solidified by cooling with liquid nitrogen in a quartz ampoule. A small amount was sealed in a quartz capillary and it was shown that a single crystal could be grown from the gas phase on a fourcircle diffractometer at −30 °C. GeF 4 crystallizes in the space group I4̄3 m with a = 50.1(1) pm and Z = 2 and is isotypic with SiF 4. The Ge-F distances are 168.9 pm. The crystal structure and the calculated Madelung part of lattice energy (MAPLE) are discussed.
