Abstract

Abstract For the first time Li 2PrO 3 has been prepared by heating Li 2O 2 and “Pr 6O 11” (Li:Pr = 2.2:1, sealed Au tube—770°C, 35 days: single crystals; 700°C, 6 days: powder). The single crystals, which according to their shape are either pale yellow or dark brown, crystallize in space group C mmm (Z = 2) witha = 957.37(10), b = 445.30(4), c = 349.44(3)pm. The structure determination (four-circle diffractometer PW 1100,M oKα, R = 1.78%, R w = 1.70% for 147 unique reflections) reveals a new type of structure whose characteristic elements are C.N. = 5 for Li + (trigonal bipyramidal) and hexagonal channels along [010]. The Madelung part of lattice energy (MAPLE) of Li 2PrO 3 is equal to the sum of the binary oxides (Δ = −0.6%).
