Abstract

Benzyl benzoate is used as an insecticide to kill scabies mites, dust mites, and ticks. It is also used as a plasticizer, a fixative in fragrances, a food additive, and a solvent. Dermatitis is the primary adverse reaction to its use as a topical solution. At high concentrations, it has been found to possess estrogenic properties and to stimulate growth of human breast cells. Cats appear to be more susceptible to the toxicity of benzyl benzoate than other animals.
