Abstract

Benzyl benzoate is an organic compound with a molecular weight of 212.24g/mol and chemical formula C6H5CH2O2CC6H5. Its several uses include being an insecticide, plasticizer, a fixative in fragrances, a food additive, and a solvent. Exposure to benzyl benzoate can be through dermal contact, inhalation of its aerosol or dust, or ingestion of food. Non-allergic contact dermatitis is the most common skin reaction by fragrance compounds containing benzyl benzoate. At high concentrations, it has been found to possess estrogenic properties and to stimulate growth of human breast cells. Oral LD50 values fall within 1700mg/g in rats.
