Abstract

The Shape and Development of Masks in the Hudoq Dayak Modang Dance of East Kalimantan. This research will discuss one of the Dayak tribe’s cultural heritages, the Hudoq dance mask from the Dayak Modang community. The Hudoq Dayak Modang mask has a background raised from the historical life of the satisfying community life in the past where the central figure Helaeng Hebeung became the starting point of history. In this study, the authors focus on the potential development and changes in the Hudoq Dayak Modang East Kalimantan Mask which is seen from the historical value. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The object of research is the Mask Hudoq Dayak Modang. To support research, there is some additional information through books and previous research. While the data collection techniques used by researchers are in the form of writing and oral consisting of observations, interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study found that each Hudoq mask has a different shape character that is distinguished in the eyes, nose, mouth and color. The shape of the Hudoq mask is based on the division of the origin of the spirit, namely the bottom of the river, wilderness, mountains, the afterlife, representatives of humans and the rulers of nature and water where the development of the shape is adjusted to the perfection of the shape of the mask. Seeing the shape and development of the Hudoq mask, there are several potential additions to several elements seen by researchers in order to perfect the shape and add value to the beauty of the mask.
