Abstract

Based on the proverbs, can find examples about the social life and values ​​of a nation. In Baghdad region, appears to be that the people have a culture of memorization, and even their daily speeches are literary predominant.  It is possible to witness that they make great use of proverbs in order to support and give color to their words and convey their messages stronger. It will be a great mistake to say that a nation has a life and culture far from the meanings of proverbs which uses them intensely. In this study, to understand better people's perspectives on men and women, proverbs are examined closely with a culture from the past. In this work, mainly studied the proverbs were used by the people in Baghdad. In Baghdad proverbs, there are 47 examples containing the concepts of "mother", "father", "boy", "daughter", "stepmother", "fellow wife - concubine", "marriage", "husband-wife", "woman" and "man" which were determined and they were studied. According to these proverbs, it is seen that the male child is considered more acceptable in the society, for whom the stepmother is not liked, the fellow wife-concubine is not wanted even if she is the best woman in the world, women working outside the home seem unnecessary, the father is the dominant leader of the family and respected a lot, mother has a very compassionate heart, and manners and cleanliness highly respected and cared. In addition to the advice and recommendations are given on carefulness in choosing a mate.
