Abstract

Coming into contact with forces of modernization at different periods of history, the age-old tradition and customs of the indigenous communities of India’s northeast began to change. The newly emerging social forces, values and ideas were alien to the traditional social life and practices of the communities. In course of time, forces that were perceived as foreign to the natives’ social life and cultural practices became part of the community life. The paper captured the contradiction that modern forces had generated within the Paite society. It also present how tradition – modernity dichotomy diminishes as both forces got embedded into the social and cultural life of the community.
