Graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960 with a Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and the professional degree of Naval Engineer. Assigned as engineer of USCGC NORTHWIND on Arctic operations 1960 and 1961. Assigned to the Merchant Marine Technical Division of the U.S.Coast Guard in 1962.
