Abstract
O artigo se debruça especialmente sobre o ensaio de Antonio Candido, “As rosas e o tempo”, em que se destacam análises de poemas nos quais estas flores são imagens centrais. Também se refere ao seu estudo “La figlia che piange”, no qual o crítico busca interpretar algumas imagens na poesia de Eliot. Ora simbolizando a juventude e a beleza passageiras, ora a vitalidade amorosa, ora, por fim, a possibilidade de renovação social futura, as rosas e as flores em geral percorrem a poesia em diferentes estações históricas seja através de um tom intensamente lírico, seja, por vezes, na modernidade, através de um lirismo mesclado com inflexões irônicas e críticas.
