Artificial Intelligence and Personality Education, and the Question of Their Ontological Foundation: From Education to Learning

Abstract

이 논문은 하이데거의 교수 취임 강연 「형이상학이란 무엇인가」(1929)와 「플라톤의 진리론」(1931/32)에 나타난 문제의식에 따라 두 개의 사유 방식을 문제 삼고자 한다. 이 중에 하나는 인공 지능 시대를 특징짓는 알고리즘에 의한 사물 이해방식이고, 다른 하나는 인성 교육의 접근 방식이다. 이 두 가지 접근 방식의 문제점을 생각하면서 인공지능과 인성교육의 접근 방식이 지니고 있는 한계를 지적하고, 그 존재론적 토대에 대해서 질문을 던지고자 한다. 이 두 가지 접근 방식이 지닌 공통점은 어떤 이상적인 본질 상태를 전제하고 이러한 상태에 이르는 것이 좋은 것이라는 낙관적인 가정, 그리고 이에 미치지 못하는 상태를 바꾸어서 거기에 부응하도록 맞추려는 시도라는 점에 있다. 이 두 시도는 고대 그리스인들과 서양의 학문 전통에서 지속되어는 관점 즉 사물을 본질과 현상으로 나누어 현상을 본질에 비추어 설명하고, 이를 본질에 부합하도록 개선하려는 시도와 그대로 연결된다. 오늘날 한국에서의 인성교육 접근 방식에도 본질과 현상을 나누어서 생각하는 서양의 이원론적인 사고방식이 들어 있으며, 이는 어떤 틀(Frame)을 정해 놓고, 틀 안에 끼우는 방식(enframe)으로 삶 또는 교육의 과정을 이해하는 경향에서 그대로 드러난다. 이러한 교육적 접근 방식을 하이데거의 해체론에 입각해서 분석하고자 한다.This article questions two approaches to critical thinking that Martin Heidegger showed in What Is Metaphysics? (1929), his inaugural lecture of professorship, and Plato’s Alethiology (1931/32). One of the two approaches is algorithmic understanding, which is the main feature of the so-called age of artificial intelligence; the other is personality education. Comparing these two approaches, I will point out their problems and limitations, and question their ontological grounds. What is common in both approaches is their optimistic presumption that education will lead students to an idealistic state of essence. Thus, it is presumed that when a student fails to satisfy expectations, the teacher should push him or her to fulfill them. This common presumption is parallel to the persisting educational viewpoints of ancient Greece and the West, which tended to divide essence and phenomenon, and tried to fix phenomena according to their presumed essence. This dualistic way of thinking in the West also prevails in the Korean approach to personality education, which seems to understand the process of education as a way to confine (or “enframe [Ge-stell]”) students within an ideally fixed “frame.” This article will analyze and deconstruct this dualistic perspective using Heideggerian criticism.
