Abstract

With this paper, we intend to observe how Brazilian critics received the movie feature Tabu, and how they see it among the new production of the recent Portuguese cinema. We part from the perspective of the reception studies, here in a transnational approach because we study a kind of reception taken place out of its original and sociocultural context of production. We cross it with theoretical and methodological approaches from Rhetoric and interpretation, in order to understand the meanings and senses that the movie produced in the discourse of the specialized Brazilian film criticism. And also we try to observe what kinds of argumentative strategies critics use to evaluate and interpret a movie. Keywords: Portuguese cinema, film criticism, reception, rhetoric.

Dando segmento ao exame dos textos, no parágrafo inicial da crítica de Pablo Villaça, do site Cinema em Cena, ao mesmo tempo em que ele apresenta o cineasta português, relembrando sua obra anterior, busca já apontar algumas qualidades que enxerga no filme: Responsável por aquele que considerei como sendo o melhor filme exibido na Mostra de São Paulo de 2008, Aquele Querido Mês de Agosto, o diretor português Miguel Gomes não decepciona neste seu novo trabalho, Tabu, que traz alguns dos elementos já presentes naquele projeto, como o humor e a estrutura atípica, além de explorar facetas novas de sua produção, como o diálogo elegante, muitíssimo bem acabado, e a capacidade de flertar com o melodrama sem tornar-se apelativo ou excessivamente açucarado (Villaça, 2012, s.p.)
As relações que pudemos tecer entre os discursos críticos e as concepções de um cinema nacional, a partir de um filme em específico, nos ajudam a pensar a forma como o cinema português é visto no Brasil, ainda que os lugares de encontros e circulação das obras estejam muito mais concentrados nas mostras e festivais de cinema
