Abstract

An advanced pH control algorithm based on the concepts of Generic Model Control has been developed for the control of high-rate anaerobic reactors. The performance of this controller is compared with a more conventional control strategy (PI) using a structured model of a high-rate single-stage anaerobic reactor. Both the conventional and advanced control strategies were subject to step changes in the influent load, setpoint, and hydraulic load. The Generic Model Control algorithm was shown to provide superior performance characteristics and maintain the stability of the reactor under all tested disturbances.
