Abstract

This research brings to the discussion a cut of the brazilian epic production, by analyzing the work Anchieta ou o Evangelho nas Selvas (1875), from the poet Fagundes Varela, native of Rio de Janeiro, whom, despite being target of severe criticism, is considered here as a literary and historical power. With that, the present work aims to critically revise the epic, bedises analyze, interpret and list the passages, through epic lenses, in which José de Anchieta and the figure of Jesus are described. To this end, the methodological line used is based on a survey of the state of art about what has already been discussed on the topic and an analysis of passages in which the heroes make themselves present. We bring, in addition to the dialogue with Anazildo Vasconcelos (2007), other researchers for theoretical support, such as Antonio Candido (2006), Massaud Moisés (2012), Christina Ramalho (2004;2017;2021), among others. The suggested analyses deal with the way in which the parallels between Anchieta and Jesus as “saviors” and Anchieta and João Batista as the Master's announcers bring a different look to the work. The emanation of the reflections of this article does not adduce closed and sealed answers, but mobilizes the knowledge to increase reading possibilities of Fagundes Varela’s work, in order to contribute with the knowledge related to epic studies.
