Abstract

Ageism is defined as a multidimensional term which involves different manners, prejudices, behaviors and actions towards elderly only for their ages. Ageism involves positive and negative attitudes. It is seen that being knowledgeable, experienced and caring as positive attitudes and being in need and ugly are seen as negative attitudes. Fear of death; caring youth, physical beauty, sexuality, economical efficiency and productivity play an important role in ageism in society. The attitudes towards ageism in society are seen mostly work and home life, social and sex life and in health services. Nurses are health staffs who have the maximum interaction with elderly while providing health services. Therefore the attitudes of nurses towards ageism are one of the most important factors which effect patient care and health care quality.
