AENM-Based Principles of Making Visual Aids to Learning Polysemous Verbs

Abstract

이 연구의 목적은 신경과학적인 학습 이론에 근거하여 제2언어 학습자들이 다의 동사를 효율적으로 학습하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있는 (그림, 만화, 동영상을 포함한) 보조 영상 제작의 기본적인 원리를 제시하는 것이다. 제2언어 학습을 촉진하기 위한 목적으로 시각적인 영상을 활용하려는 시도는 많이 있었지만, 특히 다의어 학습을 위한 보조 영상을 만들기 위해 더 체계적이고 과학적인 원리가 필요하다는 사실에는 의심의 여지가 없다. AENM은 환유가 개입된 의미의 확장이 하나의 실체(매체)가 다른 실체(목표)에 특징적으로 동반되는 언어 사용 경험의 누적을 통해 장기 기억에 등록되면서 발생한다고 제안한다. 환유가 의미 확장의 원초적이고 주된 원천이라는 AENM의 기본적인 입장에 따르면, 개별 의미를 발생시키는 특징적인 동반 경험이나 전형적인 장면을 포착한 보조 영상은 다의어의 학습들 촉진시킨다. 환유의 작용은 언어 사용의 은유적 확장이 발생하기 전에 필요한 선행 조건이며 은유는 보조적 영상의 구조적인 변환을 야기하지 않는 선에서 물상화되어 표현될 수 있다. 이와 같은 논의에 따라 마지막 단계에서는 AENM에 의해 밝혀진 원리를 적용하여 한국어의 신체 동사 ‘차다’의 학습에 사용될 수 있는 보조 영상들을 실제로 어떻게 제작할 수 있는지를 보여준다.This study aims to develop basic principles of making visual aids (including pictures, cartoons, and animations) based on neural theory of learning, to support second language learners who need to understand meanings of polysemous verbs. Although there have been many attempts to utilize images for the purpose of facilitating second language learning, it is indisputable that we need more systematic and scientifically acceptable principles of making visual aids specifically for polysemous words. AENM(Accompanied Experience Network Model) suggests that semantic extension involving metonymy occurs on the condition that an entity(vehicle) is registered in long-term memory by being recognized as a characteristically accompanied experience of the other entity(target) through successive accumulation of usage-events. Applying AENM’s notion that metonymy is a regular and main source of meaning extension, it is argued that providing visual aids capturing the characteristically accompanied experiences or typical scenes that generate neural networks for emerging distinct meanings facilitates learning polysemy words. According to AENM, metonymy is an essential prerequisite for metaphorical extension of language use, but metaphor does not bring about structural change of visual aids. In its final stage, this paper illustrates some visual aids of Korean body verb ‘chada(kick)’ by applying the principles that has been revealed by AENM.
