Abstract

The study is dedicated to the research activity of the academician Vasile Micu, a remarkable personality in the history of Romanian science and culture, and his contribution to the development of agricultural sciences in the Moldavian SSR and the Republic of Moldova. He was the founder of the scientific school of corn genetics and improvement in the Republic of Moldova, author of more than 100 corn hybrids approved in seven countries, which are grown annually on extensive areas (over 55-60 million hectares in total); co-author of 39 varieties of aromatic and medicinal plants, included in the Register of Plant Varieties of the Republic of Moldova, author of over 250 scientific works, including 4 monographic studies. He exercised important scientific and managerial functions, including director of the Scientific Research Institute for Maize and Sorghum of AŞP "Hybrid" and general director of AŞP "Porumbeni" (1986–2008), later reorganized into the "Porumbeni" Institute of Phytotechnology.
