Abstract

Sun Tzu's Art of War [Sun Tzu ping-fa], China's oldest book on military science, was written by Sun Wu during the late Spring and Autumn Period. (1) There is contained in it rich philosophical thought: particularly, the naive materialist line of thought, the method of dialectical thought, and the rudimentary thought that this method entails of the unity of subjective maneuverability and objective regularity (within the realm of war) are most brilliant. This essay will investigate and discuss Sun Tzu's philosophical thought on the military in terms of these three aspects.
