Abstract
A rapid gas chromatography technique is described for determining CO2 evolution and O2 consumption in incubated soil samples and pure cultures of soil microorganisms. Both CO2 and O2 were quantitatively detected with a thermal conductivity detector (TCD). Carbon dioxide was analyzed on a chromosorb 102 column, and O2 on a molecular sieve 5A column. Respiration rates can be easily obtained allowing a large number of samples to be analyzed in a relatively short period of time.
