Abstract

Until now the original distribution of Xerocrassa (Xeroclausa) meda (Porro, 1840) (Gastropoda: Geomitridae) was considered limited to Sicily and, perhaps, to Malta, while records from other Mediterranean localities were attributed to involuntary introductions. The presence of stable populations in Sardinia has so far been considered doubtful. The discovery of a living population in Sassari (Northern Sardinia), 183 years after the original description of Porro, which took place on specimens from this same locality, leads to a review of knowledge on the actual distribution of the species. The genital morphology of the populations from Sassari is investigated and compared with those from Sicily and literature data.
